continues the path begun in recent years, focusing on the fusion of cultures and connections
and admixture among different peoples. The watchword for this edition will be Rawabet, which in Arabic
means “connections”: a sound and cultural bridge between musicians and different communities, built around
the themes of identity, migration and intercultural dialogue.
In fact, special attention will be paid to Middle Eastern cultures, thanks to the international project
supported by the European Union's Creative Europe program, of which the Gezmataz Festival is a part, which
aims to explore how jazz unites different cultures, also strong on the migration process and
what it brings with it. The Rawabet project is spearheaded by Ettijahat - Independent Culture
(Beirut/Brussels) and is carried out in partnership with CNCM VOCE (Pigna, France), Gezmataz (Genoa,
Italy), Coculture (Berlin, Germany), Masahat for Arab Culture in Exile (Oslo, Norway) and Transversal
Project (Malmö, Sweden).
The two concerts will be held on July 5 and 6 in Piazza delle Feste (Old Port) with free admission.
- July 5: Je t'appelle quartet, formed by Bayan Rida (oud and voice), Marco Tindiglia (guitar),
Salah Namek (cello) and Marco Fadda (percussion). It will explore, through
music, the difficulty born of the urgency to leave one's war-torn country, in
this case Syria, in a journey of nostalgia, disorientation and hope.
- July 6: Estuarium Quartet, formed by Oriol Marès (clarinet), Talal Fayad (oud), Thodoris
Ziarkas (double bass) and Lucas Zegrí (percussion). The group, with musicians of
international renown, offers compositions that arise from the cultural backgrounds of the different
members, thus with Spanish, Syrian and Greek influences intersecting in a close
dialogue between cultures.
